What is Hold Head High
Hold head high is an online community involved in promoting positive awareness of mental health. With multiple social media sources facilitating our communication with one another, we hope to create a positive atmosphere on this currently stigmatized subject.
How it all Started
Without getting too much into my own story (find on our stories), as someone personally affected by mental health disorders, I have discovered there is a need to reach out to people around the world and say YOU’RE NOT ALONE – this project is how I hope to do so. Based on my own experience, I felt this project should have a few specific attributes:
First, I wished to create a strong online presence. Many personal thoughts nowadays – good or bad – are shared while behind a screen. It gives people a sense of protection and sometimes even of anonymity. Majority of individuals nowadays receive their information from Internet sources, therefore, it appeared to be the best way to reach out to people all across the world.
Second, I would like to emphasize that this is NOT a medical website. We are simply a community that shares common experiences and thoughts. I do not provide scientific facts nor do I have a medical background… Only my own story to share. I am not claiming to be an expert, I have simply found that sharing my story with others has made them realize that they are not alone. This allowed them to be comfortable discussing their thoughts and feelings and realize that there is nothing to be ashamed of.
Lastly, I wanted to reach out to the friends and family for two reasons. First of all, I feel that fear of what people close to you will think or how they will act around you plays a big factor in seeking – admittedly something I still struggle with till this day. But the second reason, and something I think we tend to forget is that if we’re struggling with something difficult, chances are those people will be affected by it too. No one wants to see someone they care about in pain. So please, reach out.
